How do we decide about snow days?
 

In Minnesota winter weather is inevitable. In anticipation of winter, HCA wants to communicate with you how we decide to cancel school or not cancel school when inclement weather is brewing.
 
Here are a few things to keep in mind regarding winter weather procedures and school closings:
 
Ultimately, it is up to you, the parents, to make the decision about whether the roads are safe enough for travel. Just because HCA is open and school is in session does not necessarily mean you feel it is safe to travel. If you believe the roads are unsafe for travel, or that the weather in your area is too severe to be out, please do not feel compelled to bring your children to school. This is especially true if you have student drivers in your family. HCA families come from all over the western metro area and often, weather conditions vary greatly from one area to another. Please make the best decision for your family. 
 
The decision to close school or not is a judgment call, and often a difficult one. We try to make the decision to close or stay open by 6:30 a.m. so parents may plan for the day. When conditions worsen between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., please understand this is when decisions are most difficult. 
 
Decisions to close are based on the current and predicted forecast. Once students start arriving at HCA, it is unlikely (but not impossible) that we will reverse the decision to stay open. 
 
If we make the decision to close the school, you will via:

• Alert Solutions is the primary means to notify parents of school closings.
• Postings will also be on the Heritage website (www.heritageweb.org).
• School closing information is also available by calling the HCA main number (763-463-2200) and pressing 7. 

It is essential that parents be aware of announcements regarding delayed starts or school closings so that students never arrive at school without teachers present. We try to avoid a late start because of the difficulty such an adjustment can cause in family schedules, as well as the need for adequate supervision at school. For the same reasons, it is equally unlikely that we will dismiss early. If, however, the forecast suggests that hazardous conditions will only impact the morning commute, a late start may be considered in order to keep special events on schedule.
 
We will not post information on area television and radio stations. 
 
Please remember the importance of your need to make the final decisions for your family. The confidence you have in your family members' safe commute is truly up to your discretion.
