Heritage First Lego League

Heritage Christian Academy is involved in First Lego League.

FIRST Lego League, founded by Dean Kamen (the inventor of the Segway) is an international robotics program intended to spark interest in science and engineering for kids ages 9-14.

Each year, teams of students plan, build, and program an autonomous robot, using Lego Mindstorms, to solve a series of challenges centered around a real-world problem. The teams use their robots to compete with other schools in sports-like tournaments and present their research and inventions to judges.

At Heritage, teams begin meeting during the second week of school in the fall. Guided by a coach, parent helpers and student mentors, the teams meet once or twice a week from September through November. Regional qualifying tournaments are held in early December, a State Championship Tournament in January, and World Festival in April.

In 2006, four Heritage teams of 6 to 9 students participated. Two teams advanced to the State Tournament and placed 6th and 17th out of the more than 250 teams statewide. The teams also took home two trophies, the Division I Research Quality Award and the Innovative Solutions Award.
